Plant Operations Manager // Assistant Plant Manager - Lynchburg, VA
Responsible for the overall management and coordination of plant operations consistent with the company's vision, values, guiding principles on integrity, environment, health and safety, customers, excellence, people, profitability and accountability. We would prefer you have particular strengths in engineering and quality control. We're moving the plant to a "TPS" type quality management system though it is not in place at the moment.

  • Plant Capabilities include fabrication laser, turret press brake panel bending stamping progressive and hand-fed, porcelain powder coating, machining, welding, assembly and knitting.
Primary Challenges
The plant is transitioning from a  "Mom & Pop" operation to a professionally managed organization. There are pockets of issues and areas which need improvement and of particular importance would be inventory management, internal communications and plant floor leadership. We'll need to you to essentially live on the plant floor and limit your office hours to probably 2 hrs/day. We do run the turret/laser department 24/7 and the full shop works weekend about 3/4 of the year. We'll need you to work some Saturdays on an as-needed basis and have the ability to check in on 2nd and 3rd shifts from time to time. We feel it is important to state this up front to help you manage your expectations, rather than to spring it on you later on in the interviewing process.
You'll be directly involved on a daily basis in Safety, Quality Control,, Engineering, Inventory management, HR, Team Building, Staff Development, Scheduling and Continuous Improvement. In practical terms you will  essentially be functioning as the Assistant Plant Manager.
Knowledge and Experience
BS degree in engineering, metallurgy, operations management or business. 8 or more years of operations and management experience in the metal fabrication or stamping industry; knowledge and experience in the Toyota Production System, strong analytical, communication, multi-tasking and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively at all levels of the organization, strong computer skills and excellent problem solving skills. Ability to interpret blueprints and related specifications. Limited travel required.
Your ability to understand plant Profit and Loss statements and drivers to effectuate improved financial performance of the plant will serve you extremely well in terms of your ability to be promoted in the organization.
